Mal Hewett at Lake Gairdner
Mal Hewett had considerable success
running his Vincent on the salt at 2010 Lake Gairdner meeting. A congratulation
email was sent. Mal's reply, report and photograph are below.
Thanks for that, hard work pays off!!. The Mag is
performing beautifully with no problems at high revs, full load!!
There are always things I think about doing to the bike, I think I will just
keep developing it, the little things are making the difference I believe as the
motor is reasonably standard compared to others.
For the time being I'll stick to the Gas class (petrol) and see how far I can
go.
There will be a BTH sticker on the bike fairing for Bonneville.

Mal's Report.
Well its over for another year and a lot of déjà vu from 2009. Once
again we could not get onto the lake until Tuesday morning due to heavy rain
over the weekend. To think that Mount Ive station had had no rain for a
couple of months before the event!! The good thing was there was no dust
to fill the trailer on the 170km of dirt on the road out to the salt, quite a
change from the last 10 years! The track itself was fine and hard but it
was the lakes access that was under water and a creek was flowing along the
edge.
We finally got onto the lake Tuesday afternoon, got set up and were 3rd
off the line mid-afternoon. We ran 148 mph on Tuesday and 148 Wednesday.
We decided to fit the fairing on Thursday and added a couple of adjustments to
the bike. It was very still on the start line but mid-track there was a
cross-wind that caught me. I tried to keep the throttle on while riding
the bike on a fair old angle. The bike then started to get blown to within
a couple of meters of the track cones, I rolled it off, got centre track
again and hit it again going through at 154mph, a pretty wild ride indeed.
Friday always seems to be the best day of racing for some reason (GOOD FRIDAY)
and this year was no exception, perfect salt and conditions. We were supposed
to be 5th off the line on Friday morning but ended up 19th ?? running mid
morning. The bike felt great and we ran 153.7 mph for a new modified
pushrod gas record. All the hard work had paid off.
Some other results, Terry Prince's injected alcohol side car ran 143mph, Cal
Carricks 1938 Comet 120 mph, John Trease's '59 Sportster on alcohol,162mph.
Unsure of Stuart Penn's result, he did leave early to ride his Lightning at the
Clipsal 500 event. And so now the team are pushing ahead with plans to
get to Bonneville, STAY TUNED.
Regards Mal and the Vincent team.
