Some Observations from Roger Moss regarding His Scott

Roger Moss of Moss Engineering, builder of the Scott raced by Paul Dobbs in 2004 and 2005 had this to say about our magnetos.

The mag on a Scott runs at engine speed, so must function efficiently up to the equivalent of 12,000 rpm on a four stroke.
Despite the very best attention to traditional BTH mags, they would not maintain timing accuracy into these higher revs and operational life was short.  I designed and built my own electronic magneto using PVL components, but these obliged me to run at twice engine speed.  Although this system was reliable, some loss of timing accuracy was sacrificed.  I was pleased to obtain one of Tony's first BT-H mags for trials on my Scott.  This magneto has proved 100% reliable, accurate and effective.  I recommend without any reservation.  Without this mag, Paul Dobbs could not have demonstrated the true potential of a good Scott in so dramatic a fashion as he did in 2005.

Test Rider, Steve Brown, G80 Matchless

The first prototype BT-H PM1R magneto used Steve Brown's G80 Matchless as a test bed.  Steve has covered many  thousands of miles using the BT-H PM1R.  His comments were that since fitting the new magneto the bike ran as it was originally supposed to.  Starting became easy and reliable, the engine pulled strongly throughout the rev range and the carburation hiccough that he couldn't tune out before disappeared.

With a production unit fitted he experimented with the spark plug gap.  He found that he could increase the recommended plug gap to 0.080" before startingsteve brown matchless.JPG (303082 bytes) became less reliable!  This didn't surprise us at all.  We bench test all magnetos before sale and to check for a good spark we use a plug with the side electrode completely removed!

(We don't recommend such a big plug  gap.  Use the manufacturers plug setting or less if your engine is not oily.  Ed)

* We pinched back the platform single BT-H magneto that Steve was testing and returned it after updating it to the latest specification.  We were able to improve our performance and specification using lessons learned after action in the Manx Grand Prix.

Steve has sent us reports and updates that can be read here.    Steve's Report

Jim Pickering, Royal Enfield Trials

We were proud to have a Royal Enfield trials bike on our stand at The Classic Bike Show.

This very nice machine is built and ridden by Jim Pickering.  He initially used a pre-production prototype of our PM1R magneto on this bike.

In his first club trial after fitting our magneto he was very impressed with the improved performance of his machine.  In a mixed entry that included some more modern machines such as Montessa's etc,  he only dropped 14 points to the winners 11.

Jim reports that the engine seems to be almost unstoppable since the fitment of the new magneto.

Jim has now updated his fixed ignition BT-H magneto to a BT-H PM1R model with electronic auto-advance.  This has brought a further improvement in slow speed control.

Bernard Rodemark, Matchless G80 Trials.

We have a few photographs of Bernard Rodemark's lovely Matchless.  These were taken at Lemington Lakes in the Cotswolds; the start of the Sammy Miller Road Trial.

Bernard uses a new BTH  magneto and made the following comment:

"I read about the new BTH Magneto in the Trials & Motocross newspaper, it
sounded like just what I wanted for my 1959 Matchless 410 trials bike.  I'd been
experiencing problems starting when the engine was hot and cutting out at
very low revs.
I managed to buy the BTH magneto at the Classic Bike Show at Stafford and since
fitting it have ridden a couple of trials.  I am really pleased with the
bikes performance now, it starts very easily and the cutting out seems to
have been eliminated."

How a new magneto changed my life!!

Fri, 14 Dec 2007

Tony,

I just thought I would drop you a quick e-mail to thank you for your magneto which I purchased from you in September for my BSA A10 twin.
It was so easy to fit and because of the adjustment facility I now have it firing at exactly the right time!!
Why Lucas never came up with a similar locking device and slotted holes I will never know.
It now starts first or second kick, whether it is cold, warm or hot and my knackered old k2f has been assigned to my old parts bin.
I would thoroughly recommend anyone who rides their bike regularly and is considering having their old magneto 'reconditioned' to spend a bit more and buy a new bt-h magneto.  It's the best five hundred
quid I've spent in a long time.
Thanks once again and keep up the good work.
