Hi Tony
Thanks for a
superb magneto - I've only just got my Vincent back on the road after a
swing-arm rebuild. Here is the text of a message I've just posted on a
Vincent newsgroup site:
Someone asked recently about impressions of
the new
BT-H mags.
I've just fitted mine during the weekend,
replacing my mag and ATD and must say initial impressions are very,
very positive. Only ridden 150 miles so far but this is the definitely
the most satisfying modification I've ever done - even better than
fitting new D front springs. The motor is markedly smoother,
especially at lower revs and maintains such a regular beat through
the full riding range that it's really a bit uncanny at first.
I'd replaced my ATD a few years ago (with a NOS one) so it was still working
as well as can be expected but the electronic auto-advance (which is
optional), combined with a good, hot spark at the right time on each
cylinder, is obviously a major step forward. As suggested, I set
the timing with 3 degrees less advance at 35 deg BTDC to compensate for the
different burn rate of modern fuels. I can't compare starting performance
because my old mag was still lighting her up with one or two kicks
(usually!) and the BT-H is no different.
Definitely a mod worth looking at, even for
you guys with electronic ignition - no more battery or generator
worries..............................................

Thank you for the kind words Dave. Keep us posted.

Hello Tony, I’ve had one of your BT-H magnetos fitted to my Vincent Series "B" Rapide for about nine months, and now, after having done 1500 miles (Yes, I know) I thought I’d give you some gen. Fitting the kit was straightforward although I made up my own bracket for holding the coils. I came up and showed it to you the week after I’d bought the kit. Timing it was a doddle! After the normal Lucas mag. rigmarole with cigarette paper and, later, a home-made insulated centre screw to do it electrically, timing is now even a pleasurable experience. But I’ve only had to do it once; I’ve not needed to touch it since. The bike started straight away and I could immediately tell that one of the carbs was out. This was not noticeable before with the Lucas mag fitted. However, a few seconds’ work with a screwdriver sorted that out. Then out on the road. I was immediately conscious that both cylinders seemed to be pulling hard and evenly and the general feeling was of great satisfaction. This feeling continues. Whereas before, starting was a bit of a lottery (See VOC magazine "MPH", Dec 93 (539) issue, Herts & Beds Section Review), it is now a first or second kick affair. I cannot offer any opinions on fuel consumption as I haven’t bothered to check it. I’ll do so soon for my own interest. One small thing: Owing to the different arrangement of the HT lead termination, I found I had to use "string" to hold the leads away from the front cylinder fins, hoping that the leads would settle down into that position with ageing. The string is still there which I suppose illustrates the lack of drama from that area. In summary, it’s a great piece of kit; certainly worth the money – provided it continues to work the way it’s doing now! All the best from Kevin Hutchinson. Thanks for the feedback Kevin. We remember you arriving on your Vincent to pick up your new BT-H magneto and returning the next day to show us how you had fitted it.

Hi Tony,
Late last year I decided to replace the ignition
system (Lucas Rita) on my series C rapide, and your magneto was top of the
list. However I read a letter in MPH the VOC magazine from a guy who said it
did not work very well with the electric start he had (a French one the same
as I have) back to the drawing board!. I ordered an electronic system from the
same French supplier only to be told at the midnight hour that it was
only available in negative earth, mine is positive so it would mean changing
the starter as well!!!.
After speaking to you (which I should have done in
the first place) you assured me it would be OK, got the system the day after
ordering it, what an excellent piece of engineering it is, fitting and timing
was really, easy following your instructions. And the performance is great,
although not too many miles yet, it starts on half a turn on the button!.
Thanks for your help and a superb piece of kit.
